On-road price calculator

Ex-showroom is not what you pay. Registration, the embossed plate, your province's vehicle tax and compulsory third-party insurance all land on top. Here is each one, itemised, with the source we read it on — and an honest list of the charges nobody in Nepal publishes.

Bagmati vehicle tax, FY 2083/84

Bagmati carried its FY 2082/83 rates forward unchanged, except for electric vehicles up to 50 kW. Bands marked in red are where the outlets we read publish different boundaries or different rates — we show the disagreement rather than quietly picking a side.

We have not verified the Finance Acts of Koshi, Madhesh, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, Sudurpashchim. Those provinces are selectable in the calculator, but the vehicle-tax line is left out of the total rather than estimated.

Where every figure came from

None of these is a government schedule. Nepal does not publish the on-road stack in one place, so this is assembled from reporting and cross-checked where possible. Verify against your Transport Management Office before you commit money.

Questions buyers actually ask

What is the difference between ex-showroom and on-road price in Nepal?+

Ex-showroom is the price of the car itself, with import duty and VAT already inside it. On-road price adds what you pay to make the car legally yours and legally drivable: the registration fee, the embossed number plate, the first year of provincial vehicle tax, the bluebook renewal charge and compulsory third-party insurance. Dealers usually add handling and delivery charges on top of that.

How much is car registration in Nepal?+

Published as a flat Rs 3,000 for a private car, jeep or van, plus Rs 3,200 for the embossed number plate that has been compulsory for all newly registered vehicles since 17 September 2025. We have found the registration figure on a single outlet and no Department of Transport Management schedule confirming it, so treat it as approximate.

Is vehicle tax the same across Nepal?+

No. Annual vehicle tax is set by each province in its own Finance Act and revised every year, so the same car costs different amounts to run in Kathmandu and Pokhara. We publish Bagmati Province rates for FY 2083/84 because those are the ones we have verified. The other six provinces are marked as unpublished rather than filled in with a guess.

How much is compulsory third-party insurance for a car in Nepal?+

Under the last published Nepal Insurance Authority motor tariff, a private car pays Rs 7,356 up to 1,000 cc, Rs 8,487 from 1,001 to 1,600 cc and Rs 10,747 above that. The FY 2026/27 budget doubled the third-party compensation ceiling from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, and we have not found a revised premium tariff, so treat those figures as a floor.

Why does this calculator not give one final number?+

Because two real costs have no published rate anywhere. Dealer handling and delivery charges are set per dealer and never published, and four of Nepal's seven provinces have vehicle tax schedules we have not verified. We list those gaps next to the total instead of burying them inside it — a confident wrong number would be worse than an honest incomplete one.
