On-road price calculator
Ex-showroom is not what you pay. Registration, the embossed plate, your province's vehicle tax and compulsory third-party insurance all land on top. Here is each one, itemised, with the source we read it on — and an honest list of the charges nobody in Nepal publishes.
Your car
Ex-showroom NPR 10,796,000, base variant, verified 2026-09-12. About 999 cc — taxed on displacement.
Vehicle tax is provincial. Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Hetauda, Chitwan sit in Bagmati.
Handling, delivery and documentation. No dealer in Nepal publishes these, so we leave the field to you rather than inventing a number.
What you actually pay
- Registration feeNPR 3,000Approximate
Published as a flat fee for a private car, jeep or van. We have found this on one outlet only and no Department of Transport Management schedule to corroborate it, so treat it as approximate.
- Embossed number plateNPR 3,200Sourced
Embossed plates became mandatory nationwide on 17 September 2025 (1 Asoj 2082), so every newly registered car pays this.
- Vehicle tax, first year (Bagmati)NPR 22,000Up to 1,000 ccSourced
- Bluebook renewal chargeNPR 500Sourced
Charged alongside the annual vehicle tax for a four-wheeler.
- Pollution certificateNPR 400Approximate
Required before a bluebook can be renewed. Quoted as approximately Rs 400; EVs are exempt from emissions testing.
- Third-party insurance (compulsory)NPR 7,356Up to 1,000 ccApproximate
The FY 2026/27 budget doubled the third-party compensation ceiling to Rs 10 lakh. No revised tariff has been published, so read this as a floor.
0.3% on top of the sticker price — and this total is incomplete, see below.
Not included in the total
- Dealer handling, delivery and documentation charges — set per dealer and not published anywhere. Ask for the figure in writing.
We are not a dealer and take no commission. Tell us your city and we will check the figures above against the Transport Management Office for your case.

Bluebook, third-party insurance, pollution certificate. Year one buys paperwork before it buys a car.
Bagmati vehicle tax, FY 2083/84
Bagmati carried its FY 2082/83 rates forward unchanged, except for electric vehicles up to 50 kW. Bands marked in amber are where the outlets we read publish different boundaries or different rates — we show the disagreement rather than quietly picking a side. Amber means unsettled, never “recommended”.

- 1,001–1,500 ccRs 25,000
- 1,501–2,000 ccRs 27,000
- 2,001–2,500 ccRs 37,000
- 2,501–3,000 ccRs 50,000
- 3,001–3,500 ccRs 65,000
- Above 3,500 ccRs 70,000
Electric, by peak motor power
- Up to 50 kWRs 6,500
- 51–125 kWRs 15,000
- 126–200 kWRs 20,000
- Above 200 kWRs 30,000
We have not verified the Finance Acts of Sudurpashchim. Those provinces are selectable in the calculator, but the vehicle-tax line is left out of the total rather than estimated.
Where every figure came from
None of these is a government schedule. Nepal does not publish the on-road stack in one place, so this is assembled from reporting and cross-checked where possible. Verify against your Transport Management Office before you commit money.
Registration
- Court Marriage Nepal — Vehicle registration in Nepal: bluebook process & fees· checked 2026-08-03
Car / Jeep / Van (private) — registration fee Rs 3,000, stated as applicable in 2083 BS.
Embossed number plate
- eStartup Nepal — Embossed number plate in Nepal: cost, rules & process· checked 2026-08-03
Four-wheelers Rs 3,200. Two-wheelers Rs 2,500, three-wheelers Rs 2,900, buses Rs 3,600.
- Common Law Nepal — Embossed number plate registration in Nepal (2083)· checked 2026-08-03
Private cars, jeeps and vans quoted in the Rs 3,200–3,500 range.
Disagrees: Quotes a range topping out at Rs 3,500 rather than a single figure. We publish the Rs 3,200 four-wheeler rate because it is the one stated as a specific tier.
Provincial vehicle tax
- Meroauto — Bagmati keeps annual vehicle tax rates unchanged· checked 2026-08-03
Private car/jeep/van: 22,000 / 25,000 / 27,000 / 37,000 / 50,000 / 65,000 / 70,000. Private EV: 5,000 / 15,000 / 20,000 / 30,000.
- Hemsguide — Vehicle tax rate in Nepal 2083/084· checked 2026-08-03
Six combustion bands topping out at Rs 65,000 above 2,900 cc. EV up to 49 kW at Rs 10,000.
Disagrees: Differs from Meroauto on the band boundaries above 2,500 cc and on the lowest EV band. Both disagreements are marked on the affected bands.
- NepaCalc — Nepal vehicle tax calculator, FY 2083/84· checked 2026-08-03
Live 'Bagmati Province tax matrix — car private (FY 2083/84)': 22,000 / 25,000 / 27,000 / 37,000 / 50,000 / 65,000 / 70,000 across seven bands, the top being 3500cc+. Four-wheeler renewal fee Rs 500, pollution certificate approx Rs 400.
- Third Wheel — Bluebook tax rates, Bagmati FY 2083/084· checked 2026-08-03
States plainly that the FY 2082/83 rate table is unchanged for FY 2083/84 in Bagmati. Renewal charge Rs 300 for two-wheelers, Rs 500 for four-wheelers.
- Fiscal Nepal — Bagmati introduces online vehicle tax payment· checked 2026-08-03
Rates held for FY 2083/84 except private EVs up to 50 kW (+Rs 1,500) and commercial EVs up to 50 kW (+Rs 1,000). Four-wheeler renewal charge Rs 500 on top of the tax.
Third-party insurance
- Automobile Hive — Third-party insurance rate for vehicles in Nepal· checked 2026-08-03
Private four-wheelers: up to 1,000 cc Rs 7,356; 1,001–1,600 cc Rs 8,487; 1,601 cc+ Rs 10,747.
- GR Sunuwar — Motor premium calculator, Nepal insurance rates· checked 2026-08-03
Same three figures for private cars, attributed to the NIA Motor Tariff 2073.
- NepaCalc — Nepal vehicle tax calculator, FY 2083/84· checked 2026-08-03
Estimates third-party insurance for a private four-wheeler at Rs 4,500.
Disagrees: Materially below the Rs 7,356–10,747 tariff figures above. NepaCalc labels this an estimate rather than a tariff lookup, so we publish the tariff — but the spread is wide enough that you should confirm with an insurer.
- Beema Post — Government doubles third-party motor insurance coverage limit to Rs 1 million· checked 2026-08-03
FY 2026/27 budget raises the third-party compensation ceiling from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.
Disagrees: Does not restate premiums. A doubled liability ceiling should raise them, so the tariff above may already be superseded.
Questions buyers actually ask
What is the difference between ex-showroom and on-road price in Nepal?+
Ex-showroom is the price of the car itself, with import duty and VAT already inside it. On-road price adds what you pay to make the car legally yours and legally drivable: the registration fee, the embossed number plate, the first year of provincial vehicle tax, the bluebook renewal charge and compulsory third-party insurance. Dealers usually add handling and delivery charges on top of that.
How much is car registration in Nepal?+
Published as a flat Rs 3,000 for a private car, jeep or van, plus Rs 3,200 for the embossed number plate that has been compulsory for all newly registered vehicles since 17 September 2025. We have found the registration figure on a single outlet and no Department of Transport Management schedule confirming it, so treat it as approximate.
Is vehicle tax the same across Nepal?+
No. Annual vehicle tax is set by each province in its own Finance Act and revised every year, so the same car costs different amounts to register in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Biratnagar. We publish FY 2083/84 rates for six of the seven provinces — Bagmati, Koshi, Madhesh, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali — each read from that province's own gazette. Two are unusual: Madhesh bands electric vehicles by the car's price rather than its motor power, and Lumbini gives private EVs a 20% discount. Sudurpashchim has not issued an Act for FY 2083/84 and our readings of its carried-forward table disagree, so we leave that line out rather than publish a figure we do not trust.
How much is compulsory third-party insurance for a car in Nepal?+
Under the last published Nepal Insurance Authority motor tariff, a private car pays Rs 7,356 up to 1,000 cc, Rs 8,487 from 1,001 to 1,600 cc and Rs 10,747 above that. The FY 2026/27 budget doubled the third-party compensation ceiling from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, and we have not found a revised premium tariff, so treat those figures as a floor.
Why does this calculator not give one final number?+
Because some real costs have no rate we can stand behind. Dealer handling and delivery charges are set per dealer and never published anywhere, and Sudurpashchim has not issued a Finance Act for FY 2083/84. We list those gaps next to the total instead of burying them inside it — a confident wrong number would be worse than an honest incomplete one.
